About the Students

Sunny Day was inspired by a love of nature and creating a beer that would appeal to non-traditional beer drinkers. Second-year Brewing diploma students Olga Mikova and Bev Marshall wanted to make a botanical beer using chamomile and honey from KPU’s own beehives.

Olga has a background in applied math, web development and business intelligence and was working an office position when COVID hit and she lost her job. Being a craft beer aficionado for years, Olga decided to change careers and follow her passion for beer and brewing.

She did her research on brewing programs; visited the KPU teaching brewery twice, spoke with students and instructors, and decided to apply to KPU because of the facilities, international recognition and friendliness of instructors and students.

When she’s not in class, Olga works at Four Winds Brewing doing quality control or you can find her on the water paddling as part of a women’s Dragon Boat team.

Bev was looking for a career that offered hands-on work, continual growth and strong community values. The craft beer community met all those criteria and more.

One of the things Bev really enjoys about the KPU Brewing program is the diversity of students including the age range of classmates and the community they've formed.

Once she graduates, Bev’s excited to put her quality control and analysis skills to work in a brewery and is keen to experiment with barrel aging products.

If she’s not in class or working in Locality Brewing’s tasting room, you can find Bev outdoors camping, kayaking, rock climbing or skiing.
