To mark November 20th as the Transgender Day of Remembrance, KDocsFF, the KFA's LGBTQ2S+ Committee, and the KSA's Queer Initiative are co-hosting KPU's premiere screening of My Name was January. Directed by Journalism alumni Elina Gress and Lenée Son, the documentary celebrates the life of the late trans activist, January Marie Lapuz. You can view the film's official trailer here.

Originally developed as a Surrey Pride event to be held at the Surrey Conference Centre, KDocsFF Presents: My Name was January has been recommissioned as a virtual event. Film producer Alex Sangha will deliver his keynote at 4:00pm, which will be followed by the screening at 4:15pm and a panel discussion moderated by Criminology's Tara Lyons beginning at 4:40pm. Panelists include filmmaker Elina Gress; Canada's premiere transsexual fetish lady, Velvet Steele; and non-binary student activist Jack Kennedy, who will be joined by Alex Sangha. The proceedings conclude at 5:30pm.

We gratefully acknowledge the event's sponsor, the President's Diversity and Equity Commitee (PDEC).

Pre-registration is open now for the FREE community event. Please email mynameisjanuary@kpu.ca to register and recieve the live link to the event when it becomes available.
