What was the issue being addressed?
The issue being addressed was community crime and disorder. My thesis explored how individuals use these groups to connect, stay informed, exchange information, be engaged community members, and engage in crime prevention – if it was utilized in that way.

Provide a brief, lay description of the work undertaken/initiative.
My thesis explores the use of Metro Vancouver Facebook Neighbourhood Groups (FNGs). I wanted to know how people use their FNGs and how the community they live in impacts their experience. My thesis also explored the relationships FNG members have with their fellow community residents, and their relationships the police. I then shared my research findings with other academics panel-style, at the BC Studies: Power and Place Conference at UBC.
What is the expected impact this project will have on the community?
This thesis will aid Metro Vancouver municipal governments; law enforcement; and community centres to learn how to use FNGs to communicate timely and relevant information with residents. This will strengthen social ties and informal social control, and increase feelings of community and belonging amongst residents.
