Call for REB Community Member - May 2025

CALL FOR COMMUNITY REB MEMBER

KPU’s Research Ethics Board (REB) invites applications for a community member to serve on the REB, as per Basic Research Ethics Board Membership Requirements in the Tri-Council Policy Statement 2 (TCPS 2 2022). This will be for a two 2-year term starting September 1st 2025 with a modest stipend for each meeting.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The REB reviews the ethical acceptability of all research involving humans in compliance with the Tri-Council Policy Statement, KPU’s RS1 Research Involving Human Participants Policy, and other relevant ethical standards, policies, and legislation.

  • The primary role of the community member on a REB is to reflect the perspective of the participant.
  • Community members review relevant research materials before each monthly meeting and contribute to meeting discussions from the participant’s perspective.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • A community member is someone who lives in the community that KPU serves, and/or is a current or past research participant. As a regional, special purpose teaching university, KPU has a mandate to serve the combined areas of school districts 35 (Langley), 36 (Surrey), 37 (Delta) and 38 (Richmond).

  • It is important that the community member does not work or study at KPU.

  • Experience in research is NOT required. We recognize that many community members possess unique insights and perspectives that can greatly contribute to our ethical review process, regardless of their research background. It is preferable to have no working experience in these areas.
  • Agree to a two-year term (with the possibility of renewal).
  • Attend 10 REB meetings per year on the last Friday of every month from 10am- 1200pm (meetings are held in-person with an option to attend virtually via Microsoft Teams).
  • Review materials before each monthly REB meeting.
  • Provide input and take part in discussions during meetings.
  • Review one to two minimal risk studies (studies that do not get reviewed at meetings) each month independently on your own time.
  • Be comfortable reviewing electronic documents.
  • Time commitment is about 4-6 hours per month, this includes the 2 hours monthly REB meeting.
  • Completion of the online tutorial called the TCPS 2: CORE-2022 (Course on Research Ethics) will be required.

COMMITMENT
