Lab Services Offered
The KPU Applied Genomics Centre offers Sanger and Next-Generation sequencing, as well as an assortment of hops analyses, and consultations by request. All work is conducted by trained personnel on state-of-the-art instrumentation under the supervision of KPU faculty.
Hops & Beer Analyses
Detailed analysis of alpha and beta acid content and essential oil abundance in hops is performed on-site by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and gas chromatography (GC/MS) following American Society of Brewing Chemists (ASBC) methods.
Price per Sample
- Total alpha and beta acid analysis with HSI - $120 per sample
- Hops essential oil analysis - $90 per sample
- Moisture content of hops - $10 per sample
- Terroir package, including alpha and beta acid analysis and essential oil analysis - $190 per sample
- 15% discount if more than 5 samples are submitted
Please see Hops Testing Information and download the Hops Testing Submission Form. Review the terms and conditions.
Sanger Sequencing
The Applied Genomics Centre provides Sanger sequencing services to the KPU community as well as to outside academic and industry researchers.
DNA sequence data can be obtained from either plasmids or from PCR products. Sequencing is performed in-house on an Applied Biosystems SeqStudio Genetic Analyzer. We also offer fragment length analysis (FLA) service on the SeqStudio instrument.

Fragment Length Analysis
- $5.00 per injection (four colour multiplexing is possible)
Results of Sanger sequencing can be provided as either .ab1 files or text files. Results of fragment length analysis are provided as .fsa files.
Consultation on sequencing project design, data analysis and data interpretation is also available.
Please contact us for further questions or information about template considerations, sample preparation, multiplexing options and more.
Next Generation Sequencing
The Applied Genomics Centre performs next-generation sequencing in-house using our Ilumina MiSeq System. We currently offer 16S metagenomic analysis, which provides identification of all bacteria in a sample to at least the family level (with genus and species data provided for some).
Consultation on sequencing project design, data analysis and data interpretation is also available. Protocols to generate other types of data may be provided, please contact us to discuss your requirements.

16S Metagenomics
KPU Faculty and Staff
- $150.00 per sample
Non-KPU Members
- Academic: $175.00 per sample
- Industry: $200.00 per sample
Total genomic DNA should be provided to the lab for library preparation.
Please contact us for preparation details and information regarding turnaround times.
Other Lab Services
Additional services available include qPCR for quantification or pathogen detection, genotyping using SNPs or microsatellites for varietal identification, and sequencing of barcode regions for species ID.
Faculty or staff consultation on genomic and metabolomic research projects may also be available upon request.
