Bachelor of Arts, Major in Sociology
The Bachelor of Arts Major in Sociology provides students with critical, practical, and transformative studies that aim to prepare them for life and work in a diverse and globalized world. It is a flexible and well-rounded program, offering academic rigor in the study of societies in local and global contexts. Opportunities for engaging in applied, experiential, and community-based learning are provided throughout the program.
Students enjoy courses in a wide range of topics in Sociology, such as gender and sexuality, racialized and ethnic minority groups, economic inequality, Indigenous studies, media and cultural studies, education, global social problems, and social justice. In their final years of the program, students hone their research skills by taking courses with a primary research component. They may also take a service-learning course, in which they gain practical experience by volunteering for their chosen organization within the community.
Bachelor of Arts, Minor in Sociology
The Bachelor of Arts Minor in Sociology program is a versatile and valuable accompaniment to a major or minor degree in the arts, sciences, business, technology, or health-related fields. Because sociology covers a wide range of subject areas, it complements and broadens students’ perspectives and understandings of subjects covered in many other disciplines. The BA Minor in Sociology program aims to familiarize students with sociological theories and research methods, expose them to some of the main sub-fields in sociology, and enable them to explore a variety of social issues and strategies for social change in local and global contexts. Students are offered opportunities for engaging in hands-on learning activities, primary research projects, experiential and community-based learning, and community service work.
