Kwantlen Announces Third Year of the Richmond Farm School

METRO VANCOUVER, BC – (December 13, 2011) – Kwantlen Polytechnic University and the Institute for Sustainable Horticulture, in cooperation with the Richmond Fruit Tree Sharing Project, the Richmond Food Security Society, City of Richmond and VanCity, are pleased to announce the third year of the Richmond Farm School. Commencing in February, classes run Thursday, Friday and Saturdays until November.

The purpose of the Farm School is to educate people with diverse backgrounds, on urban focused agriculture enterprises including producing, processing, distributing, marketing and selling farmed products. Topics include plant science, crop production, soil and water management, small farm technology and business planning to name a few. The program balances 350 hours of theoretical (classroom) and 350 hours of applied (field/ practical) skill development.

The program teaches students urban and peri-urban agriculture focusing on sustainability through hands-on, practical experience. Upon completion, students have access to "incubator" farm land, up to ½ acre for three years at significantly reduced rates, to begin their agricultural enterprises. Technical support and shared equipment will be available to incubator farmers.

Kwantlen Polytechnic University has been serving the Metro Vancouver region for more than 30 years, and has opened doors to success for more than 250,000 people. Four campuses—Richmond, Surrey, Cloverdale and Langley—offer a comprehensive range of sought-after programs, including business, liberal arts and science, design, health, trades and technology, apprenticeships, horticulture, and academic and career advancement. Over 17,500 students annually have a choice from over 200 programs, including bachelor’s degrees, associate degrees, diplomas, certificates and citations.
