KPU brewing students release a series of 10 limited-edition student signature recipe beers

Thu, Jan 27, 2022

Over the next few weeks, beer fans will be able to buy 10 brews showcasing the talents of the latest brewers emerging from Kwantlen Polytechnic University.

Every year, students in their last semester of the two-year brewing and brewery operations diploma program work together to make their own signature brew as part of their capstone project. This year, one new beer from the 10 student teams will be released in cans each Friday, starting January 28.

“The students’ signature beers are the result of their creativity and two years of intense learning in the diploma program,” says Dominic Bernard, chair of the KPU brewing program. “It’s exciting to see their passion combined with their skills and watching them develop these recipes, brew them, conduct quality control analysis, and participate in the packaging, design and sales.

“It’s a full-circle moment where they bring it all together to showcase their signature beer and talent.”

The 2022 Signature Series beers include:

  1. Bad Habits Maple Bourbon Stout
  2. Best Blokes English Special Bitter (ESB)
  3. Overcast Brown Ale
  4. Summertime Witbier
  5. Maumahara Belgian Pale Ale
  6. Big Softea Vanilla Chai Latte Stout
  7. Citrus Drop British Golden Ale
  8. Dark Haze Milk Stout
  9. Giovane Pils Italian Pilsner
  10. Big Apricot Fruit Saison

Releasing January 28, the Bad Habits Maple Bourbon Stout was brewed by students Mark Yates and Leone Dutra. It features rich flavours of maple and smoky Bourbon balanced with roasted notes of caramel, chocolate and coffee give Bad Habits its full, warm flavours.

“I’ve always been a big fan of stouts, so I wanted to come up with an idea that featured flavours I love outside of brewing,” says Yates. “The addition of maple and Bourbon flavours creates a rich, delicious complement to the roasted notes in this beer.”

The signature beers will be available in six-packs on Fridays from Jan. 28 – Apr. 8, 2022, from 1-6 p.m. (except for stat holidays and campus closures) at the KPU Brew Lab at 20901 Langley Bypass, Langley, B.C.
