A lifelong career in brewing and teaching is being honoured in the most fitting way — with a commemorative beer.
Kwantlen Polytechnic University (KPU) is releasing the special beer on Feb. 20 to celebrate the retirement of legendary brewmaster and instructor Nancy More. Titled Final Lecture, the brew is a smooth yet crisp-bodied black lager with aromas of toasted bread, dark chocolate, and caramel, along with notes of plum, date, and raisin.
“To have a beer brewed in my honour is truly humbling,” says More. “I hope it reminds people that this community and industry is at its best when we lift each other up, stay curious and never stop learning.”
More leaves a remarkable legacy behind. A pioneer of modern brewing education, she played a foundational role in developing the curriculum for KPU’s Brewing and Brewery Operations diploma program, ensuring students not only received technical excellence but also a deep respect for the craft, science and community of brewing.
“Nancy’s influence extends far beyond the brewhouse and the classroom,” says Alek Egi, program chair. “She was more than an instructor of brewing science and craft — she fostered a thriving community, opened pathways for others to succeed and set a benchmark for excellence that will inspire and guide the industry for years to come.”
As one of the first female brewmasters in North America, More broke barriers in a traditionally male-dominated field. Throughout her career, she has remained a dedicated advocate for inclusivity and equity in brewing, continually uplifting and supporting women in the industry.
“Brewing has never just been about making great beer. It’s about building community, sharing knowledge and creating space for others to grow,” says More.
“When I first started, there weren’t many women in the brewhouse, and I never imagined the industry would evolve the way it has. Seeing the talent, passion and leadership of the next generation — especially the incredible men and women shaping brewing today — has been the greatest reward of my career.”
In 2019, More was also recognized for her impact and contributions to the industry with a Legend Award at the BC Beer Awards.
Final Lecture will be available to the public for purchase in cans on Friday, Feb. 20 from 1 to 6 p.m. at the KPU Brew Lab, 20901 Langley Bypass, Langley.
