While at Kwantlen Polytechnic University (KPU), Nhicelee Galapate immersed herself in a wide range of opportunities that shaped both her academic journey and professional aspirations.

“Pursuing a degree at KPU has been an incredibly transformative journey for me, personally and professionally. I have developed the technical expertise and practical skills essential for success, along with the resilience, adaptability and passion that will guide me as I move forward in my career,” says Galapate, winner of a President’s Outstanding Graduate Award in the degree program category.

Graduating with a Bachelor of Business Administration in Human Resources Management, Galapate received the award during convocation ceremonies this week at KPU Surrey.

Selected to participate in the Melville Business Strategy Internship (MBSI) program, Galapate gained firsthand experience applying her human resources training in a real business environment — an experience that also laid the foundation for her capstone project. She further enriched her learning through work as a student assistant with KPU International and volunteering with KPU Open House and the Office of Global Engagement’s short-term programs, supporting visiting students and contributing to a welcoming, globally-engaged campus community.

Galapate also broadened her international perspective by participating in scholarship-supported experiences: a two-week study abroad program in Japan and a two-week field school in the United Kingdom and France. Together, these opportunities helped build the practical skills, global awareness and professional confidence, preparing her to thrive in dynamic, globally connected workplaces enriched by diverse perspectives.

“KPU has given me more than just an education. It has shaped my character, expanded my perspective and prepared me to make a meaningful impact in my future endeavours."

Beyond her impressive academic achievements that include a 4.1 cumulative grade point average, Galapate demonstrated exceptional perseverance while at KPU by balancing her work schedule and volunteer commitments with her studies. Outside of KPU, Galapate gives back to her community through music by volunteering with the New Living Assembly Langley Outreach worship team, serving as a pianist and vocalist.

“Along the way, I built lasting friendships, embraced cultural diversity and deepened my appreciation for empathy and compassion,” she says. “With every person I meet, I not only want to make a good impression, but I also want to make them feel seen, heard and encouraged, leaving behind a gesture of kindness that reminds them they matter. I strive to bring these values into every aspect of my personal and professional life.”

Galapate says she is deeply grateful for the support of her parents and is also thankful to her approachable and supportive instructors at KPU, along with peers, mentors, family and friends for their continued guidance and inspiration. Now having completed her bachelor’s degree, she is excited to continue growing professionally and exploring opportunities within the field of human resources and her community.

“My future goal is to build a career in human resources, particularly in recruitment and talent acquisition or learning and development, where I can contribute to creating inclusive workplaces by helping individuals access meaningful opportunities and supporting employees in developing their skills and reaching their full potential.”
