The Barley Mill Brew Pub & Sports Bistro is one of Penticton’s original craft breweries, brewing beer in the South Okanagan since 1997. Located in the heart of one of BC’s fastest-growing craft beer regions, Penticton is home to 8 local breweries and the Penticton Ale Trail. We are seeking a passionate and experienced Head Brewer to lead and manage our in-house brewing program. This is a hands-on role overseeing all brewing operations on our 10HL brewing system, maintaining our flagship beers while developing creative seasonal and specialty brews. This position is ideal for someone who thrives in a small team environment, enjoys autonomy, and takes pride in producing high-quality craft beer.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Lead and manage all brewing operations, including wort production, fermentation, conditioning, and packaging.
- Oversee beer canning, kegging, and packaging processes while ensuring efficiency and quality control.
- Maintain strict quality control standards for all beer produced.
- Develop and refine beer recipes and seasonal releases while maintaining our flagship brews. Monitor and manage fermentation, including gravity readings, pH levels, and temperature control.
- Handle yeast management, including harvesting, pitching, and maintaining healthy yeast cultures.
- Transfer beer between tanks.
- Manage carbonation levels to ensure proper CO₂ volumes and product consistency.
- Maintain brewing records, batch logs, and production schedules.
- Order and manage raw materials inventory including malt, hops, yeast, and packaging supplies.
- Maintain organization of the brewery workspace, warehouse, and walk-in cooler.
- Ensure cleaning, sanitation, and safety protocols are followed throughout the brewery.
- Assist with packaging operations including kegging and canning.
- Complete required IDB, Duty, and Excise paperwork and reporting.
- Collaborate with management on new beer releases, seasonal beers, and brewery events.
Experience and Skills:
- Experience with the full brewing process from grain to glass.
- Familiarity with IDB, Duty, and Excise compliance and reporting.
- Strong organization and record-keeping skills.
- Ability to work independently in a one-person brewing operation.
- Ability to lift and maneuver up to 50 kg. Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality.
- Must be 19+ years of age. A genuine passion for craft beer.
- Equivalent combinations of education and brewing experience necessary
Pay Range: $27.00-$30.00 per hour
