Brewing at KPU
The Certificate in Brewing gives students a solid foundation in the history, science and practical skills needed to make beer. The program serves as an entry point into the brewing industry or as a stepping-stone toward the Diploma in Brewing and Brewery Operations.
Certificate Requirements
The Certificate in Brewing is designed to be completed in one year, from September to April. For the full list of required courses, click here. After successfully completing the certificate, graduates can choose to pursue their diploma, applying their certificate credits towards the diploma requirements, and completing an additional year of education.
Who Studies Brewing?
Brewing applicants come from diverse backgrounds and prove to have more than just a passion for craft beer. They demonstrate interest in areas such as biology, chemistry, engineering, business, technology, and food.
Brewing is a physically demanding, hands-on career; Brewing students are expected to wear appropriate protective clothing and safety gear at all times inside the brewery and science labs. They should expect to work on their feet for 6 to 8 hours in what may be a hot or cold, wet, noisy environment and should be capable of lifting 25kg or moving 50kg.
Career Opportunities
Graduates of the Brewing and Brewery Operations Program are prepared for diverse careers across brewing, beverage alcohol production, and the broader food and fermentation industries. In addition to roles such as assistant brewer, brewer, cellar operator, packaging technician, or production supervisor in craft breweries, brewpubs, and larger production facilities, graduates are well qualified for opportunities in wineries, cideries, distilleries, fermented beverage and food production, and food and beverage manufacturing.
The program develops strong, transferable skills in applied microbiology and chemistry, sensory evaluation, quality assurance and quality control, laboratory analysis, process control, sanitation and regulatory compliance, packaging systems, and production management—equipping graduates with versatile, job-ready expertise that supports long-term career flexibility in an evolving marketplace.
