Getting Ready: Inclusive Climate Adaptation and Disaster Risk Reduction at KPU

Description: This course will explore the intersection of inclusion and accessibility, disaster risk reduction, and climate impacts at KPU. The goal is to support the KPU community in reducing injury and harm when disasters occur. Students will learn about and explain climate risks in plain language. Students will identify gaps in getting ready for disasters, including in existing KPU plans. Students will develop recommendations for the Director of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (Disability Justice) and the broader KPU community, to ensure that no one is left behind.

POST 4900 ST: Advocacy & Geopolitics

This seminar course will grapple with the impacts, opportunities and challenges of advocating for sustainability and progressive policies given current geopolitical realities.

Turbulent geopolitical times challenge democratic institutions, rules-based order, and evidence-based policymaking. A focus on economic sovereignty calls into question prior commitments to social and environmental sustainability. Yet pressing sustainability issues such as climate change continue to pose critical risks to the biosphere, our economies, our communities and our well-being, with differential impacts.

Within this context, and using equity and climate as lenses of analysis, we will explore a range of current advocacy issues in Canada and beyond. We will examine various theories of change and consider strategies to continue advancing positive change.
