Course Description
This course is for both Registered Nurses (RNs) and Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs). Learners will develop competencies in psychomotor skills necessary to provide safe patient care. They will discuss the roles and responsibilities of the RN when performing psychomotor skills, examine the impact of research and technology and compare current practice standards to their own level of knowledge, judgment and skill. Emphasis is placed on communication skills, critical thinking, ability to organize and prioritize, identification of own learning needs, and competency in performance of psychomotor skills.
Please note: Applicants intending to register for Consolidated Clinical (PNUR 9130/9034/9020) are required to show proof of English proficiency. Please see the Consolidated Clinical websites for full details.
Course Format
This course is offered as an online synchronized or as an onsite course utilizing the psychomotor labs at KPU Langley campus. When in person, this course is delivered over four (4) consecutive days, online dates may vary. Learners should expect to spend six (6) hours per day in the nursing lab/simulation labs and an additional eight (8) hours of self-guided learning activities to prepare. Full attendance and participation are required to achieve mastery. Learners must access the course website in advance of the in-person sessions to prepare for class.
Online options are available - check our main webpage for current schedules. The online class typically runs over four (4) days synchronized with additional asynchronized days; learners should expect to spend approximately 24 hours to complete the online course. Skill kits will be mailed to students in advance of the start of class. Course cost includes practice kit of lab supplies provided during class or mailed in advance if online
Course Grade
Successful grade for this course is Mastery. Learners who are not successful in PNUR 9111, Psychomotor Skills Review may attempt the course for a second time. Learners requesting a second attempt are required to seek permission from our office, in writing. Learners are advised to contact their Canadian Nursing Regulatory Body for advisement if they are not successful after a second attempt. Third attempts are not permitted. No exceptions. Please note, there is no appeal mechanism within KPU for students receiving non-mastery.
Entrance Requirements
To be eligible to register, applicants must have one of the following:
- Completion of KPU Competency Assessment and Enhancement for Nurses’ (CAEN) assessment
- A letter or email referral from a Canadian Nursing Regulatory Body, this course does not need to be identified in the letter so long as the learner has a decision letter
- Current nursing licensure
Textbooks/Course Materials
Reliable Internet access required. Online course modality may not be fully functional when utilizing iPads &/or android devices. Take home lab supplies will be mailed in advance of the class to those learners residing in North America and attending an online course. If you reside outside North America a supply list will be provided. Learners attending in-person workshops will be given skill kits during class.

- Canadian Fundamentals of Nursing by Ross-Kerr, J. Potter and Perry. Latest edition and/or a copy current in the last 5 years. Available through the publisher at [Elsevier] or [KPU Bookstore].
- Drug Guidebook – one of the following:
- Recommended: Lippincott Drug Guide (latest edition)
- Davis Drug Guide (latest edition)
