Maintenance and Removal

Maintenance and Removal

KPU values its natural spaces for teaching and learning, wildlife habitat and as part of the university’s commitment to sustainability. Decisions regarding tree removal within the KPU context are data-driven and in accordance with the audit's recommendations.

We have reviewed key zones to decide on species retention and habitat creation without comprising safety for our campus community. A working group of KPU’s Natural Spaces Advisory Group has walked through the campus reviewing the arborists recommendations for tree removal and prioritized maintenance based on pedestrian and parking area safety.

As a result, 35 trees were identified as requiring removal for safety reasons. KPU has submitted for and received a permit for removing these trees. Trees considered of no risk to campus activity and that may have teaching and learning significance or that may support wildlife activity were not included in the decisions to remove.

And while we are removing trees, we're also replacing them. As part of the removal process, we're developing a strategy for tree replanting to preserve the health of the KPU Surrey forest.
