(Metro Vancouver) – The Eagles Golf Team travelled to Nanaimo for the 3rd Tournament in the PACWEST calendar hosted by Vancouver Island University (VIU) at the Nanaimo Golf Club this past weekend. First-year Eagle, Jason Thompson (Langley), proved that he could master the course and compete with the best in the league by shooting to 4 over par (76) on Day 1. Thompson finished strong in the final round with a birdie on 14, an eagle on 16 and nearly birdieing 18 to go even par on Day 2 for a total of 149 to tie him in 8th place in the tournament, well within reach of the other competitors with only 6 shots separating him from 1st place.

Hot on Thompson’s heels was third-year veteran, Thomas Rose (Surrey), with a total of 151 over the two-day tournament (76, 75). Rose had a great second day as well with a birdie on 16, flagging 17 to three-feet but missing the putt, and lipping out on 18 for another birdie. First-year teammate, Aaron Ferrer (Delta), had a great Day 1 score of 74 which was the Eagles best score of the day after birdieing the 18th hole and allowing him to round out the Eagles’ showing in the top-20 at 18th place with his combined score of 155 after a disappointing Day 2 round. Eagles Women’s golfer, Caroline Gleerup (Sweden), had a perfect first tee shot to open the tournament but posted a modest and consistent score over the two-day tournament and was unable to move up the ranks at the difficult Nanaimo Golf Club.

With this confidence showing, the Eagles men’s team moved up the ranks to 4th place with a cumulative 611 points in the tournament and just a stone’s throw away from third place held by VIU (598 points). “What an exciting situation for the team”, said head coach Levi Arcega. “Our goal in this tournament was to move up one notch to fourth place and we have. Now we need to maintain it [going into the last tournament].”

After Tournament #3, Jason Thompson is Kwantlen’s leading scorer with a cumulative score of 454 for 13th place in the rankings after this weekend’s stellar showing. Rose is currently in 16th place with 461 points followed closely by Ferrer in 18th place with 465 points over the course of 108 holes played.

The fourth and final tournament of the season will be held at the Chilliwack Golf Club hosted by the University of the Fraser Valley this weekend, on October 6th and 7th.
