Job Description/Position Overview:

The Interns (two positions available) are key members of the Capilano Course and Grounds team, whose education allows them to be involved in every aspect of maintaining the property.

 

Overview: 

Work a minimum of 40 hours a week, generally 5 days on and 2 days off, while being flexible to the possibility of working weekends and evenings. Attitude is sought over aptitude and training will be provided to ensure the skills below are mastered. Responsibilities will include, but is not limited to the following; Emanate a professional workplace attitude and appearance Work closely with the Assistant Superintendents in all aspects of the operation Work closely with our Environmental Coordinator to: perform fertilizer and chemical applications, execute product trials, calibrate equipment, maintain accurate application records and product inventory, and assist in Audubon re-certification requirements Participate in scheduling and performing cultural practices on all playing surfaces Be highly involved in record keeping and data collection on the property, which includes fertilizer and chemical applications, mowing schedules and heights of cut, disease/pest activity, weather conditions, cultural practices, green speeds, clip volume, and many other course condition indicators Assist with all aspects of the irrigation program including hand watering, operation of the central control system, troubleshooting and repairs, head adjustment and coverage audits, and providing feedback on evening water requirements Responsible for carrying out a variety of skilled and semi-skilled tasks relating to course projects, including the safe operation of heavy equipment Carry out any assigned tasks to a high standard and in a timely and efficient manner, while ensuring the safe use of equipment and materials Act as an ambassador of the Course and Grounds Department within the club and as a representative of the club at professional outings Required to be available as much as possible for weekend shifts, split shifts, and shifts during our major aeration and topdressing (April and September – if this fits the internship period) Opportunity to conduct morning meetings and gain supervisory experience. Contribute a written article to the club newsletter.

 

Notes: In addition to the above, Intern(s) are asked to submit detailed learning objectives prior to their start date and will be given the appropriate time to complete all objectives with our skilled technical staff Intern(s). Will need reliable transportation due to the different shift requirements and start times involved with an internship. There is no reliable public transit to and from the club during certain hours

Intern(s) will have the opportunity to attend industry events, including chapter meeting(s) and golf, as well as a Green Committee meeting.

 

Golf Course Information:

Capilano is a private 18-hole facility located in beautiful British Columbia. Constructed in 1938 by esteemed Canadian golf course architect Stanley Thompson, Capilano is continually ranked in the top 10 golf courses in Canada by Score Golf Magazine and ranked in the top 50 golf courses in the world outside the United States by Golf Digest. The golf course was voted the #1 golf course in Canada for 2018 at the World Golf Awards. Capilano is open to play year round, with the majority of the 32,000 rounds/year played between April and October. Capilano is committed to continually restoring and improving the golf course. Over the past several years, a Course Long Range Master Plan has been in place to renovate and restore the course. A new staff Maintenance Facility was constructed in 2011, and the construction of a new Fleet Maintenance Facility was completed in early 2017. Our high performance team is comprised of 35 employees who love to work outdoors, enjoy being in the company of others, and who take pride in their work.

 

Qualifications:

A student enrolled in a recognized landscape or turfgrass management program and who will be returning to school following the internship period.

 

Compensation: $20CAD/hr.
