Psychiatric nursing graduate receives Governor General’s Silver Medal from Kwantlen
(METRO VANCOUVER, B.C.) Kate Cheung, Bachelor of Psychiatric Nursing graduate, received the Governor General’s Silver Medal at Kwantlen Polytechnic University’s 2010 Convocation ceremony held at its Surrey Campus.
For this Burnaby resident, graduating from the Bachelor of Psychiatric Nursing program was a critical step to achieving her dream job.
“I was able to get a clinical placement at BC Children’s Hospital which was my dream employer since I started the program because I’ve always wanted to work with children or adolescents.”
As a mental health resource team nurse, Cheung rotates her time between the adolescent in-patient, child in-patient, and child and adolescent psychiatric emergency wards at BC Children’s Hospital. She credits her ability to work in these diverse areas to the variety of clinical placements that were offered each semester, and the small classes which allowed for more personalized attention from her faculty.
In the future, she looks forward to pursuing her master’s degree in counselling psychology or nursing.
On behalf of the Governor General of Canada, this medal is awarded to a Kwantlen student who, in the opinion of the selection committee, has attained the highest academic standing in the graduation year of a bachelor’s degree program. It is one of the highest academic honours Kwantlen can bestow.
