About the Students

KPU Brewing students Jacob Wideman and Colton Yakabuski were inspired by Dageraad Brewing’s attention to detail with their Belgian beers, and decided they wanted to make a Belgian Pale Ale using New Zealand hops.

Prior to joining the KPU Brewing program, Jacob was a professional poker player (yes, you read that correctly!), which he found to be an antisocial occupation. Looking for a more social career, he took a position at Farm Country Brewing and embarked on his formal education at KPU. One of his favourite parts of the diploma is learning about the business and politics of the beer industry, especially navigating the past few years of the pandemic. When Jacob isn’t in school or having brunch with his classmates, you can find him managing the taproom at Farm Country.

For Colton, his journey to the KPU Brewing Diploma started with a love of beer and brewing. He’s had a variety of jobs, including grocery store manager, garbage truck swamper and tasting room server.  He’s also passionate about Hip Hop, producing music and running a radio station! When he’s not spinning tunes or at school, you can find him working at Farm Country Brewing in Langley.
