Job Description/Position Overview:

The Irrigation Technician is a full time, year round position. He/she is responsible for the complete operation and care of the irrigation system and is a key part of the Capilano Technical Team.

 

Golf Course Information:

Capilano is a private 18-hole facility located in beautiful British Columbia. Constructed in 1938 by esteemed Canadian golf course architect Stanley Thompson, Capilano is continually ranked in the top 10 golf courses in Canada by Score Golf Magazine and ranked in the top 50 golf courses in the world outside the United States by Golf Digest. The golf course was voted the #1 golf course in Canada for 2018 at the World Golf Awards. Capilano is open to play year round, with the majority of the 32,000 rounds/year played between April and October. Capilano is committed to continually restoring and improving the golf course. Over the past several years, a Course Long Range Master Plan has been in place to renovate and restore the course. A new staff Maintenance Facility was constructed in 2011, and the construction of a new Fleet Maintenance Facility was completed in early 2017. Our high performance team is comprised of 35 employees who love to work outdoors, enjoy being in the company of others, and who take pride in their work.

 

Qualifications:

  • A degree or two year diploma in a turfgrass related field from a recognized College or University is preferred.
  • Desire to succeed and exceed standards at an intensely maintained golf course.
  • Willingness to learn and aid in implementing new programs.
  • Knowledge of Toro irrigation systems, Lynx, and VP satellites is preferred but not required. A sound knowledge of the game of golf is an asset.
  • Efficient with use of computers.
  • An understanding of golf and how it relates to our operation and membership.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Ability to obtain a BC Pesticide License within first 30 days of employment.

 

Responsibilities include:

  • Emanate a professional workplace attitude and appearance.
  • Be responsible for the efficient monitoring and maintenance of the irrigation system for the golf course and also the clubhouse gardens, including completing new installations, maintenance and repairs to the expected standard.
  • Be a team player who brings forward new ideas, is open to change and new practices, and has a solutions based approach.
  • A high level of attention to detail to achieve even and consistent coverage across the property to produce a healthy but firm and fast playing surface.
  • Assist the Course Superintendent and Assistant Superintendents with monitoring of daily water requirements, maintain the central irrigation control system and six Pressure Reducing Valves.
  • Be highly involved in record keeping and data collection on the property regarding water usage and moisture management, including monitoring of the irrigation lake levels.
  • Carry out any assigned tasks to a high standard and in a timely and efficient manner, while ensuring the safe use of equipment and materials.
  • Act as an ambassador of the Course and Grounds Department within the club and as a representative of the club at professional outings.

 

Compensation: Competitive hourly wage D.O.E. and offers health and welfare benefits.
