Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)
What is MFA?
Multi-factor Authentication (MFA) is a security process that requires the user to provide more than one verification factor to gain access to accounts and secure data. It is a process where a user is prompted during login for an additional form of identification. Multi-factor or Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) minimizes the chances of your account being compromised by adding a second layer of security during the log-in process.
How Does It Work?
When you log into an MFA protected account, you will be prompted to verify your identity with a second method. You can choose the method of two-factor authentication during the setup for your account. You can also set up multiple methods so that you have a backup method if your primary verification method is not working.
For KPU employees, two-factor authentication applies when you try to log in to Microsoft Office 365 applications (like webmail and Teams), Citrix Workspace and VPN. After you enter your password, you will be asked to verify your identity using the method that you have configured for your account.
The following authentications methods can be configured for MFA:
- Microsoft Authenticator App (IOS and Android)
- Hardware Token
- Text or call to a cell phone (this method is being discontinued by Microsoft)
- Email (this method is being discontinued by Microsoft)
Microsoft or KPU do not have any tracking access to your personal device.
Your Authenticator App or phone number is only accessed and used by you to confirm your login.
MFA was enabled for all faculty and staff as of April 15, 2022.
