Associate Vice President for Research, Innovation, and Graduate Studies
Deepak has led research, innovation, productivity, and entrepreneurial initiatives over an impactful career involving five academic institutions and four businesses. He has more than a dozen awards and honours for his contributions as a distinguished leader, engineering researcher, and published scholar. A global citizen, he has lived in ten provinces or states and speaks four languages.
Deepak received his engineering doctorate from Washington University in St. Louis. He has a Bachelor of Technology (Honors) degree from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, India.

Darya Kostromitina, BTM
Darya joined KPU in November 2020. As a Confidential Assistant, she performs a wide variety of responsible and complex administrative functions and has a strong communication role. The Confidential Assistant is accountable for coordinating the activities of the AVPRIGS’s Office, with a particular focus on strategic collaboration and partnerships with internal and external stakeholders.
Originally from Ukraine, Darya moved to Canada seven years ago to pursue her education in Tourism and Social Studies. Over her previous career path, Darya gained expertise in communications, budget development, leadership, operations, logistics, and complex event planning.
Jim Rahaman, CPA, CA MBA MCSI M. Eng.
Business Transformation Lead
The Business Transformation Lead ensures that Research, Innovation and Graduate Studies policies, procedures, processes, and practices are continuously monitored and improved for the benefit of KPU’s students, researchers, staff, funders, and industry partners.
Jim is a CPA, MBA with nearly twenty years of experience in public and private sectors spanning financial management, strategic planning, compliance and investing. Jim holds certifications Lean Six Sigma (Green Belt) and Prince2 (Project Management). He serves on the board of a provincial science teachers’ association and as an advisory board startup mentor for an applied science and engineering incubator at a large research university.

Senior Manager, Research and Innovation Partnerships

James works with faculty, students, and industry to maximize the value of new research through the strength of relationships with our partners and community. He is passionate about academic innovation with over ten years of business development and project management experience supporting applied research. Educated in Canada and the US, he has an master of science in Software Engineering and a Commerce degree with a focus on marketing. James has taught and provided workshops on project management, commercializing new products, cybersecurity, and entrepreneurship. James enjoys kayaking, music, listening to audio books, and drawing with his two young daughters.

Sanja Javanovic, MD, MSc.
Health Research Specialist/Advisor
Sanja brings a unique blend of more than eight years of medical experience and 10+ years of health outcomes research experience in healthcare and academia. As a Health Research Specialist/Advisor, she provides scientific support to health research study development, reviews funding proposals prior to submission, serves as ad-hoc Research Ethics Board advisor for health research studies and advises ethics research board on relevant aspects of ethics approval process. She represents ORS on the Faculty of Health’s Research and Scholarship Committee and identifies collaboration opportunities between healthcare and KPU.
Sanja received her MD degree from Medical School University of Zagreb and MSc in Community Health and Epidemiology from Dalhousie University, Halifax.

Catherine (Cathy) Parlee
Research Services Coordinator
Catherine (Cathy) Parlee is the Research Services Coordinator in the Office of Research Services (ORS). Cathy recently earned a Research Administration Certificate at Mohawk College which, paired with her 11-year tenure in the ORS, contributes to a growing knowledge of research matters that includes many aspects of pre and post funding management. Learning, listening and understanding serve Cathy well as she strives to provide a positive customer experience for the KPU community and outside partners who come to the ORS with questions or in need of assistance.

Kathy Leung, BA
Marketing and Communications Support
Kathy supports the Office of the AVP, Research, Innovation, and Graduate studies with the administration of the Mitacs Business Internship Program with the School of Business. She oversees communications with employers, students, and staff in the program and manages the program’s webpage. In addition to her support with the Mitacs Business Internship Program, she supports the Research office in communications and marketing and helps to manage the department’s social media presence.
Foluso Fagbamiye, B.Sc, MBA, PgDip. Project Management
Research Ethics Coordinator
Foluso Fagbamiye has worked in various roles at three BC post-secondary institutions over the last sixteen years. As the Research Ethics Coordinator, she is the primary resource for all employees and students who liaise with the Research Ethics board (REB). Her expertise interpreting and applying policies and ethical requirements helps ensure that KPU is compliant with commitments and obligations under the Tri-Council Policy Statement 2 (TCPS2 2018) on use of humans in research. Foluso worked internationally as a micro-paleontologist, in market research and public relations. She has a Bachelor of Science in Geology, Master's in Business Administration and post graduate certificate in Project Management.
