The English Department fosters an inclusive environment, committed to student opportunity, connection, and success. Home to caring faculty members dedicated to student support, KPU English offers multiple resources to ensure students have access to university facilities, pedagogical technologies, and health services.
For students taking first-year English classes, KPU English offers the First-Year Writing Labs, which have helped hundreds of past students succeed at the start of their English studies.
As well, the English Department offers several exciting scholarships and awards, which can provide financial support for students who take upper-level English courses. One of our awards, the Intersectional Social Justice English Essay Prize, annually recognizes strong writing from students at all levels of English studies.
There are other unique ways for students to gain recognition and build their CVs for their future careers and/or graduate studies. Home to Mise-en-scène: The Journal of Film and Visual Narration, the English Department publishes first-rate essays from scholars around the world, often collaborating with English student volunteers at several stages of the publication process. Likewise, our journal Alight annually publishes the best of undergraduate English essays by KPU students.
KPU English hosts the Canada Research Chair in South Asian Literary and Cultural Studies, Dr. Asma Sayed. Through the CRC’s work, KPU English has been treated to several international events focusing on developing scholarship.
The department hosts student clubs and frequently holds student events, such as parties, symposia, guest speakers, and information sessions. Follow our Instagram page to keep apace of future department news.
