Securing Doors During a Lockdown
Many campus rooms are equipped with card reader access and internal locking features that can be used to help secure a space during a lockdown. The guidance below outlines common door configurations and how they can be used to help restrict entry if a lockdown is initiated.
Doors with a Card Reader on the Door
- Close the door.
- Press the privacy button on the back of the card reader.
- The card reader will flash and may beep to indicate privacy mode is activated.
- Card access will be disabled except for security override privileges.
- If a thumb turn latch is present, move it to the locked position.
- If safe to do so, barricade the door using available furniture or equipment to help restrict entry.
Doors with Other Hardware Configurations
- Close the door.
- If a thumb turn latch is present, turn it to the locked position.
- If safe to do so, barricade the door using available furniture or equipment to help restrict entry.
These actions should be completed quickly and calmly when directed to lockdown or if an immediate threat is present.
