This guide will help you set up the Microsoft Authenticator app and configure it as your default multi-factor authentication (MFA) method. 
It’s strongly recommended to use both a phone and a computer when setting up the Microsoft Authenticator app—your phone to install and run the app, and your computer to display the QR code for scanning.

Setup Microsoft Authentication app for MFA

  1. Install the Microsoft Authenticator app on your phone from Play Store (Android) or App Store (Apple).
  2. Login to Microsoft Security Info portal using your KPU credentials.
  3. Under “Security Info” page, click on “Add sign-in method.

 

  1. Select “Microsoft Authenticator” option.

  1.  Since you have already downloaded the app, click "Next". At the next window, click "Next" again.

  1. At this window, you will be asked to scan the QR code

Once you are at the "Scan QR code" window and have downloaded the Microsoft Authenticator app on your cell phone, follow the below steps on the Microsoft Authenticator app:

  1. Launch the Microsoft Authenticator app on your device.

  2. Add your KPU Account by tapping the '+' symbol in the app. Select the "Work or school account".

  1. Scan QR Code:
    Scan QR Code Option: Select the "Scan QR code" option, and scan the QR code shown on your computer/laptop screen.

  2. At this step, you will receive a notification on your mobile device from the Microsoft Authenticator app requesting verification. This notification will display a two-digit code. Verify your account by entering this exact same two-digit code on your computer screen within the pop-up window.
    After entering the code, tap on "Yes"

  1. If successful, your KPU Employee account will be successfully set up on the Microsoft Authenticator app. Refer to the screenshots below for a visual reference of a successfully added account. Follow the remaining on-screen prompts to complete the setup process by clicking "Next" and "Done".

  1. Finish Setup:
    Tap "Finish" on phone app screen to complete the setup.

  1. Your KPU account should now show in the Microsoft Authenticator app.


Update your default MFA method to Microsoft Authenticator App:

After setting up the app, you must update or verify that your default MFA method is the Authenticator App. Follow the steps below to change or verify your default MFA method:

Note: If your "Sign-in method when most advisable is unavailable" set to Authenticator App, you don't need to perform the steps below.

  1. Go back to Microsoft Security Info portal, Click on "Change" next to  "Sign-in method when most advisable is unavailable" section.  

  2. Change your default sign-in method to "Microsoft Authenticator – App based authentication – notification”, and click “Confirm”.
