Kwantlen Polytechnic University (KPU) was gifted its name from the Kwantlen First Nation. We respectfully acknowledge that we live, work, and study in a region that overlaps with the unceded traditional and ancestral First Nations territories of the Musqueam, Katzie, Semiahmoo, Tsawwassen, QayQayt, and Kwikwetlem, and the lands of the Kwantlen First Nation from which our name is derived.
The Institute for Sustainable Horticulture would like to acknowledge the Okanagan First Nation Alliance, Soowahlie, Squiala, Sumas, and Syilx. Whose lands we have also used to conduct research.
The Institute for Sustainable Horticulture would like to extend our land acknowledgement beyond the Canadian border. Through ROBA (Rural Organization for the Betterment of Agro-Pastoralists), ISH was given the honour of working directly in Ethiopia with the Oromo, whose system of governance, known as Gada, is protected through UNESCO's World Heritage designation. The Gada system of governance is a tool used to regulate all aspects of the community to unite social classes, enforce moral conduct and embrace their unique culture through the regulation of the political, economic, social and religious needs. While combatting issues such as conflict resolution and the protection of women’s rights.
