Below are some suggestions for how to integrate the tutorial into your class. Please note that this tutorial only provides an overview of GenAI and students could benefit from further reinforcement and discussion around the specifics of GenAI and academic integrity within your class and discipline.

For support on designing your assessments to support integrity in a world with GenAI, connect with the Centre for Educational Transformation.

Sharing the Tutorial

We encourage you to link to the Tutorial Info Page on the Academic Integrity website as the page includes helpful information for students prior to taking them to the Moodle site. The tutorial is restricted with certain pages needing to be viewed before future parts can be accessed.

It is recommended for students to have completed the Introduction to Academic Integrity Tutorial first. You may want to consider requiring this in your class first.

Some of the tutorial content links to the GenAI LibGuide. Consider having students review this beforehand so they have some background knowledge before starting the tutorial.

If you are an instructor at KPU and would like to review the tutorial content, please email GenAI.Tutorial@kpu.ca and we can add you as a non-editing teacher so the section restrictions won't apply.

Viewing Student Completion of the Tutorial

Timing

Many instructors incentivize completion of the tutorial with their students by providing bonus marks in the course or making it a requirement in their course (such as part of a participation grade or a small assignment). This tutorial takes approximately 1-1.5 hours to complete. The tutorial has 5 modules and can be assigned to students in sections as well.

For Example:

  • Week 1 – assign Modules 1-2 to provide students with an overview of KPU's approach to GenAI, culminating in a class discussion about GenAI expectations in your class
  • Week 2 – assign Modules 3-4, culminating in a discussion post
  • Week 3 – assign Module 5, resulting in the GenAI and Academic Integrity for Students Badge which will be visible on their Moodle profile

This allows for more discussion and encourages better retention of the concepts, rather than having students cram it all in the first week and forget about it. This can also be helpful for new students to feel less overwhelmed at the start of their studies at KPU. The first page of each module is also unrestricted, so instructors can assign the modules in a different order if preferred.

Activities

The tutorial is offered in an online asynchronous format, but supplementing this with additional in-class or written activities can help students better understand GenAI and academic integrity at KPU. It can also be helpful to have students complete the tutorial in class and pausing at certain parts to have a class discussion.

What should students do after completing the tutorial?

Now that students have received an overview of GenAI and academic integrity at KPU, it is important to continue talking about it throughout the semester, in particular, having discussions around:

  • what academic integrity looks like when using GenAI in a specific course or discipline
  • what pitfalls to avoid given the specific context of an assignment or exam

Module 5 in the tutorial also includes additional resources on academic integrity and GenAI for students to explore.

Some students prefer to learn by listening to audio rather than reading text. Is this an option for students?

ReadSpeaker, a text-to-speech tool, is available in this Moodle course!

Are you looking for other ways to incorporate GenAI expectations in your course?

Consider including the Can I use GenAI Flowchart - this is available as a PDF and H5P
