Spruce building renovation

Status: In Progress

Location: Surrey Campus

Description: The Spruce renovation is getting a major infrastructure upgrade, thanks to generous funding from the Government of Canada's Post-Secondary Institutions Strategic Investment Fund and the B.C. Ministry of Advanced Education. This $22-million renovation will add 2,100 square metres of space to the building, reduce energy consumption, increase the capacity for innovation, maximize existing space, and enhance applied research, training and experiential learning opportunities. The renovation will provide for an additional 300 student spaces over the course of an academic term. It will also address deferred maintenance and aging infrastructure of a 27-year-old building.

The Government of Canada is contributing $7.3 million to the project, while the provincial Ministry of Advanced Education is contributing $14.7 million.

Completion is anticipated in April 2018.

Construction is being phased so that programs can be relocated and continue running either elsewhere within Spruce or in other campus buildings.

Renovations will include:

  • -Improving studio access and providing more storage space.
  • -Improving the heating, ventilation, air-conditioning, lighting and data systems, which will reduce gas and electrical consumption as well as maintenance costs.
  • -Improving the overall lighting and mechanical system.
