Faculty of Arts Research and Scholarly Mentorship Award Nomination

Eligibility

Nominees for the Faculty of Arts Research and Scholarly Mentorship Award may be individuals or groups/teams inclusive of faculty, staff, and alumni who are studying and/or working within, or affiliated with, the Faculty of Arts.

Past recipients of the Faculty of Arts Research and Scholarly Mentorship Award are eligible to receive the award every five years. Exceptions to this rule include an individual recipient of the award who is also eligible to receive the award as a member of a group/team within a span of five years. Similarly, a recipient of the group/team award is eligible to receive an individual award within the span of five years. Individuals and groups/teams cannot self-nominate.

Ineligibility

Recipients who have received both the individual and group/team research and scholarly mentorship award within a five-year period are ineligible to be nominated for the Award again. An individual will become eligible again to be nominated for the award after the time frame for having received the award has passed five years.

Nominators and Nomination Packages

Nominators may be students, faculty, staff, or alumni of KPU. Nominators cannot nominate more than one individual or group/team in a given year. Letters of reference can be written by faculty, staff, alumni and students.

Nominations Deadline

Nominations open on April 3, 2023 and close on June 15, 2023.

Nominations must include:

The completed nomination form and a written statement (100-300 words) about why the nominee(s) is/are deserving of the Faculty of Arts Research and Scholarly Mentorship Award.

Two letters of reference (maximum of 500 words; attach and submit as PDF files) *Please note that the Dean and Associate Deans cannot supply letters of reference for nominations.

Nominees will be required to submit a philosophical statement (maximum 500 words) about their approach to leading students into an understanding of the research process and the various techniques and approaches they employ in mentoring their students.

Criteria for selection of the recipient(s) may include any of the following:

  • Evidence of sustained orientation toward mentorship of students
  • Collaborative orientation in terms of student involvement in conceptualizing the research or the scholarly undertaking.
  • Commitment to the growth and development of students’ research competencies
  • Student involvement in knowledge integration and mobilization including:
    • Publications and conference presentations with students
    • Community outreach and engagement

Two kinds of activities are eligible for nomination:

  1. Course based research experiences including:
      • Experiences based on Honors level study.
      • Research supervision courses
      • Practicum based experiences.
      • City Lab (type) projects

These must meet the criteria set out for the award more generally and would be assessed in terms of demonstrating relevance and/or impact that extends beyond the confines of the course.

  1. Non-Course based experiences:
      • Faculty initiated research projects wherein the student is hired as a research assistant.
      • Faculty initiated research project wherein the student volunteers to play the role of a research assistant.
      • Laboratory based experience.

These must meet the criteria set out for the award more generally and would be assessed in terms of demonstrating due regard for pedagogical structure and collaborative character.
