BC Scholarship Society

The BC Scholarship Society provides scholarships and awards to BC students to assist them with the completion of their post-secondary studies. Each year, the Society, administered by the Victoria Foundation, provides hundreds of scholarships and awards between $1,000 and $10,000 each to students studying at public post-secondary institutions across B.C. In 2022, 242 International Scholarships were given out. 

1. One World International Scholarship

What: The One World International Scholarship program is designed to assist students to participate in academic, cultural, language, or experiential study programs outside of Canada and the United States. In delivering this program, the BC Scholarship Society hopes to encourage students who are intellectually curious and are interested in expanding their educational experiences while at the same time developing a globally literate citizenry and workforce for BC.

Amount: $2,000 CAD to $5,000 CAD (per recipient)

Eligibility: To be eligible to apply for this scholarship, you:

  • are a Canadian citizen, permanent resident (landed immigrant), convention refugee, or protected person living in Canada;
  • are a resident of British Columbia, defined as having a primary residence in the province for at least 12 consecutive months prior to the date of full-time enrollment in the program for which the scholarship is applied for;
  • have clearly demonstrated significant community and/or school involvement and academic achievement, supported by two references submitted with the application;
  • are enrolled full-time in an academic program of at least one year at a BC public post-secondary institution leading to a credential and have been accepted into an eligible international program outside of Canada or United States;
  • can demonstrate links between the international experience you are pursuing and your educational or career goals;
  • are not planning an international experience in a country from which you have immigrated within the past 5 years;
  • have not previously received a One World International Scholarship or a Premier’s International Scholarship;
  • plan to begin your international experience before May 1, 2025; and,
  • will return to British Columbia after completing your international experience for further education or work.

HOW TO APPLY:

STEP 1: Fill out the One World Scholarship Application Form.pdf

STEP 2: Download your unofficial transcript by following these instructions (please save the document as a PDF)

STEP 3: Prepare one (1) reference form to support your scholarship application. The reference must be provided by an individual (either faculty member or community involvement/work reference) who can comment on your accomplishments, character, and motivations and confirm your participation in community and/or school activities. 

NOTE: You can use KPU Study Abroad program references for your application to the One World International Scholarship. If you already submitted two KPU Study Abroad reference forms (one faculty reference and one community reference), you will only need to submit the One World Scholarship application form.

STEP 4: Email all the above documents to internationalprograms@kpu.ca. Your reference form must be emailed directly to internationalprograms@kpu.ca by your reference.

APPLICATION DEADLINE: The same as the application deadline for your global learning experience (i.e. exchange semester, summer school, field school, etc.)

NOTE: In 2022, the One World International Scholarship was awarded to 29 KPU students. The award amounts ranged between $2,000-$5,000 and were used to support a wide range of global learning experiences such as long-term and short-term global learning programs. If you have previously received this award to support your global learning opportunity, you might not be eligible to re-apply and receive it again. Please connect with your study abroad coordinator to discuss your specific case and circumstances.

2. Premier's International Scholarships

What: The Premier’s International Scholarships are for credential granting study abroad and are awarded to students demonstrating exceptional academic achievement and a clear sense of how a globally literate citizenry impacts our society.

Amount: $8,000 CAD to $12,000 CAD (per recipient)

Eligibility: 

  • are a Canadian citizen, permanent resident (landed immigrant), convention refugee, or protected person living in Canada;
  • are a resident of British Columbia, defined as having a primary residence in the province for at least 12 consecutive months prior to the date of full-time enrollment in the program for which the scholarship is applied for;
  • have achieved a minimum 3.0 (B) academic standing;
  • can demonstrate links between the study- or work-abroad experience you are pursuing and your educational or career goals;
  • are enrolled full-time in an academic program of at least one year at a BC public post-secondary institution leading to a credential and have been accepted into an eligible international program outside of Canada or United States;
  • will be studying abroad for a period of no less than three months (not including travel time);
  • plan to begin your international experience before May 1, 2025;
  • are not planning an international experience in a country from which you have immigrated from within the past 5 years;
  • have not previously received a Premier’s International Scholarship;
  • will return to British Columbia after completing your  international experience for further education or work.

Students may apply for both One World and Premier’s International Scholarships, but the total amount awarded will not exceed the value of the Premier’s Scholarship.

How to apply:

  • Visit the online application system here
  • Create an account (or login, if you already have one). To start the application process, you will be asked a series of questions regarding your eligibility for a Scholarship;
  • If you are found to be eligible, you will automatically be able to begin working on the the application form. Your work is saved as you go and you may continue to edit the application form until you submit your fully completed application package;
  • You will need to upload a copy of your unofficial transcript(s);
  • Applicants must provide two (2) email addresses for separate References who can speak to your abilities, accomplishments, activities, character, motivations and/or success as a global citizen. The online application system will send an automatic email to your referees with a link to fill out the reference forms on your behalf;
  • Once you have completed all components of the online form, AND have your references and transcript(s), click “Submit”. You will NOT be able to submit if you are missing any supporting documentation. Once you submit your application package, you are no longer able to make edits.
