Work Study Update

We are pleased to announce the increase in funding for the Work Study programStarting Fall 2021, subsidy for each Work Study positions will increase from $1500 per work term to $2000 per term.  

For the Academic Year 2021-2022, 20 Work Study positions will be subsidized per work term from September 2021 to August 2022.

 

What is a Work Study?

This program is an initiative designed to assist students who show financial need by offering part-time student assistant jobs.  KPU faculty and staff can hire students that are eligible for the program as per specific student criteria  and receive subsidies from SAFA.

What are the criteria for students to apply?

Student must

  • Demonstrate financial need.
  • Be a domestic student
  • Be enrolled in full time studies during Fall and Spring semesters (9 credits or more) during the work term (Students extended until Summer requires to be enrolled a minimum of 3 credits only)
  • Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0

 

How many hours per week can they work?

maximum of 15 hours per week

What is the position duration?

  • 4-month contract
  • 8-month contract
  • 12-month contract

When is the deadline for hiring a student?

Fall 2021: September 24, 2021 (All hiring paperwork must be submitted by October 8, 2021)

Spring 2022: January 28, 2022 (All hiring paperwork must be submitted by February 11, 2022)

 

Funding of Work Study positions
    • 4-month contract (maximum subsidy of 1x $2000)
    • 8-month contract (maximum subsidy of 2x $2000)
    • 12-month contract (maximum subsidy of 3x $2000)

* Subsidy per work term is increasing from $1500 to $2000 per term.  Please note that all overages of the $2000 will be paid by your department.

What is the wage?

Rate of pay is $15.20 per hour (or current B.C. minimum wage rate) plus 4% vacation pay

Summer Extension

For contracts ending in April 2022, hiring managers who wish to extend their current Work Study student for the Summer must submit a Summer Extension Form by April 16, 2022. Please note that no new hiring will take place for the Summer work term.

Work Study Opens for Fall 2021

June 7, 2021

Employers can post Work Study Positions in Career Connection and begin the hiring process.

Last day to hire for Fall 2021

September 24, 2021

Employers must send the name and student number of student/s being hired.

Last day to submit Hiring paperwork for the Fall 2021 term

October 8, 2021

All Hiring paperwork must be completed and sent to the Career Development Centre at careers@kpu.ca

Work Study Hiring for Spring 2022

November 1, 2021

*Hiring will only open if the quota has not been met for the Spring semester.

Last day to hire for Spring 2022

January 28, 2022

Employers must send the name and student number of student/s being hired.

Last day to submit Hiring paperwork for the for Spring 2022

February 11, 2022

All Hiring paperwork must be completed and sent to the Career Development Centre at careers@kpu.ca

Summer Extension 2022 Deadline

April 15, 2022

No new hires will be made for the Summer however, for contracts ending on April 2022, current employers may extend their current Work Study Student for the Summer by filling up a Summer Extension Form and sending the signed copy to careers@kpu.ca before April 15, 2022
