Important: This 4-hour class includes time for viewing films From the dawn of moving pictures through to the present world of blockbuster f ranchise movies, this course focuses students on the history and development of world cinema and examines film as a visual language and art-making practice. Stu dents will learn methods for exploring aesthetic and technical functions of film along with considering the social, political, and technological contexts of mov ing pictures.

Important: How did art move away from tradition to the modern mash-up culture we see around us today? This course offers a survey of changin g ideas in the visual arts of Europe and North America during the first half of the twentieth century with special emphasis given to the movements of the histor ical avant-garde. Traditional media such as painting, drawing and sculpture will be examined alongside the newer media of photography, assemblage, film and coll age.

Important: Social and political revolutions evolve hand in hand with the production and circulation of radical and countercultural art. In t his seminar, students will explore shifting ideas related to industrialization, political ideology, rapid urban growth, global commerce, and the new media techn ologies of an expanding consumer culture in defining a wide range of revolutionary visual art and culture from the 18th through 20th centuries.
