Important: It is said that a photograph is worth a thousand words, and in today's visually intensive cultures, we produce more of them than ever before. But what are the debates and histories that inform this medium, and how have artists and other practitioners shaped photography's place in our world? In this seminar, students will study the history and evolving debates and theories concerning photography and photographic practices from the mid-19th century to the present, looking at the complexities of “photographic seeing” and “photographic reading” as key components in the understanding of photography’s broad cross-disciplinary appeal and historical importance.
