Special Topics-The Geography of Food: Students will investigate the global production, distribution, and consumption of food from a geograp hic perspective. The food we produce and consume is linked to physical aspects of climate, soil, and water, as well as human aspects of culture, society, and ec onomy. With globalization, aspects of the food production system are changing, increasing social and geopolitical inequalities. Students will study the role of food in our lives today, including a focus on current issues of production (e.g. agribusiness, genetically modified food, organic food, food security in a chang ing climate), distribution (e.g. global vs. local production, food miles, accessibility), and consumption (e.g. cultural and religious meanings of food, underno urishment and obesity, fast food, future food trends). A varied classroom approach will include discussions, research projects, guest speakers, field trips, and food tastings.
