The Once and Future King Arthur: According to medieval legend, King Arthur is known as the “Once and Future King.” While we may not be holdi ng our breath for his literal return, it is clear that writers and artists will continue to resurrect the legendary king in their storytelling. In this class, w e will analyze poetry, fiction, drama, film, television, and graphic novels from the Middle Ages to the present. We will explore how these texts use King Arthur and his world to discuss ideas about what makes a “good” society and what happens when that society fails to live up to our expectations. From the vantage poin t of 2020, we will also examine how authors and filmmakers use Arthurian legend to represent contemporary notions of race, gender, neurodiversity, sexuality, an d other aspects of identity.

Indigenous Digital Media: This course will explore the relationship between digital media and Indigenous cultures in North America. Digital content — including podcasts, film, music, tweets, and blog posts — will be placed in conversation with media theory and key Indigenous Studies texts in order t o draw connections between media production and Indigenous struggles for self-determination. Special attention will be paid to Indigenous cultural resurgence an d spaces of (re)conciliation. Over the course of the semester students will be given the tools to thoughtfully and critically engage with Indigenous digital med ia, and to present their ideas to both academic and community audiences.

POSTCOLONIAL ECOCRITICISM: This course will focus on postcolonialism as it intersects with environmentalism. Analyzing issues of global jus tice and sustainability through literary texts, we will study the impact of colonization on indigenous agricultural practices, climate change and the resulting destructions, petrocultures and our reliance on fossil fuels, through the lens of postcolonial and ecocritical theories. Our aim is to study how fictional texts can suggest new ways for thinking about impact of colonization on climate change and provide opportunities for imagining better futures.
