Bring to your studies renewed depth, purpose, and global awareness 
Over the two weeks in Colombia you will visit significant cultural locations and design projects such as the Gold museum in Bogota historic center, the modern city of Medellin, examples of vibrant contemporary Colombian design, bamboo architecture of the coffee region, and the historic walled city by the sea Cartagena. Through these excursions and guest lectures, you will gain insight into the history and culture of the region as well personal and global issues related to design.

  • The role of the designer and of multicultural and global experiences in design
  • Overview of design theory and knowledge
  • Leadership and issues for designers
  • Social responsibility and environmental concerns in design
  • Design for an intercultural and global community
  • Design assessment in context
  • Interdisciplinary skills in creativity, design thinking, academic inquiry, and cultural awareness

Travel during the COVID-19 Pandemic

Currently we are still in the midst of a global COVID-19 pandemic, where there are various health measures in place depending on the country and region. It is the responsibility of each participant in the field school to read and understand the current policies, entry requirements, and restrictions for international travel to Colombia. If there are any circumstances or concerns that will affect your participation, please discuss them with the field school faculty leaders.

  1. Travel to Colombia
  2. Travel by air and rail as of October 1, 2022 from the Government of Canada:
  • You shouldn't travel to Canada if you have COVID-19 symptoms
  • All passengers are strongly recommended to wear a mask while they travel

  3. Travel Advisory by the Canadian government
 

Cost and Payment Details 

Program Fee

$3,260 CAD (estimated) 

Program fee covers:

  • Accommodation
  • Local transportation,
  • Tours, city transfers, 
  • Entrance fees to museum/gallery/exhibitions
  • In-country flights  
  • Daily breakfasts

Does NOT cover:

  • International Flights
  • Your personal spending budget
  • Additional transportation costs, 
  • Most meals
  • KPU tuition (3 credits) 

NOTE: Should a decision be made by KPU to cancel a field school due to low enrolment or other academic/risk issues, participants will be entitled to a full rebate of any payments made including the deposit.

Classes Offered and Pre-requisites

DESN 3100 Design Field School (3 credits)

Classes begin in April and are co-taught by Lucie Gagnon & Marlis Joller. Exact days/times for the pre-departure classes are TBD. Some of the pre-departure work will be done self-paced over Moodle.

Pre-requisites

45 credits of 1100-level courses or higher, or with permission from field school instructors

Note that no previous Design experience is needed to enroll in DESN 3100. 
All KPU students are welcome and are encouraged to apply.
