Practicing Law in Canada After Bond

To practice law in Canada, graduates must be admitted to the Bar in their respective provinces. A Bond law degree is eligible for admission; however, there are steps to complete before admission.

The following is based on the policies of the National Committee on Accreditation (NCA), part of the Federation of Law Societies of Canada (FLSC). This information may change, so students should always verify with the NCA website.

1. Obtain NCA Certificate of Qualification

After completing your degree at Bond, you will apply to the National Committee on Accreditation (NCA) for a Certificate of Qualification, which confirms that your legal education is equivalent to that of a Canadian law school graduate. You’ll submit your transcripts and an online application with supporting documents (including transcripts from other universities, if applicable).

The NCA currently requires graduates to complete five Canadian law exams, either through courses at a Canadian law school or through self-study Challenge Exams, which are the most common option for Bond graduates.

The five required exams are:

  • Canadian Constitutional Law
  • Canadian Criminal Law
  • Canadian Administrative Law
  • Foundations of Canadian Law
  • Canadian Professional Responsibility

Bond offers four of these courses (Constitutional, Criminal, Administrative, and Foundations) as electives. Students complete these once at Bond and then again through the NCA Challenge Exams. The Canadian Professional Responsibility course is provided at Bond as a non-graded seminar, free of charge.

Note: As of January 1, 2022, NCA applicants must also complete a course in Legal Research and Writing from an approved Canadian Common Law Program, or the NCA’s own Legal Research and Writing module through the Canadian Centre for Professional Legal Education.

2. Articles / Law Practice Program (LPP)

Once you have your NCA Certificate of Qualification, you are in the same position as any Canadian law graduate. You will complete Articles with a law firm in your province (typically 8–12 months), registering as an Articling Student with your Law Society. Your law firm will track and verify your hours.

Depending on the province, you may also need to complete Barrister and Solicitor exams (open-book, all-day exams) or participate in a Bar Admission Program that includes examinations and skills assessments.

Alternatively, you can complete the Law Practice Program (LPP) at Toronto Metropolitan University, which combines professional legal training with an internship at a law firm, offering a pathway similar to Australia’s Practical Legal Training model.

3. Bar Admission

Once Articles or the LPP are complete, and all exams or program requirements are met, you will:

  • Pay your licensing fee
  • Participate in a call-to-the-Bar ceremony

Be admitted to practice law in your province

Career Outcomes

Bond University graduates have pursued a wide range of legal careers, including:

  • Practicing lawyers across Canadian provinces
  • Corporate counsel and legal advisors
  • Public sector legal professionals
  • Legal academics and researchers
