FAQs for Current Students

1. I need to see an International Student Advisor right now

International Student Advisors assist students during scheduled appointments and Drop-in sessions. For urgent matters, we recommend attending one of our  Online or In-person Drop-In Sessions. You can find more information about connecting with an International Student Advisor at here.

2. What and when are drop-in sessions? Are they one-on-one?

Drop-in sessions allow students to meet with International Student Advisors without needing an appointment and receive one-on-one support. These Drop-In sessions operate on a first-come, first-served basis.

We recommend students join 10 minutes early for online sessions or 15 minutes early for in-person sessions. You can find the schedule at our 'Connect With Us' webpage.

3. My agent told me I need a convocation letter to invite my parents.

KPU does not issue convocation letters. Instead, students must write a notarized letter of invitation. For a list of required documents and a sample invitation letter, please visit the Inviting Family or Friends to Convocation webpage and follow the steps outlined there. If you don’t yet know your exact convocation date, you can include the convocation period listed at the bottom of the Convocation webpage.

4. Can I take a Scheduled break in the next semester?

KPU's Scheduled Break is defined as follows: Students can take one of the Spring (January to April), Summer (May to August), or Fall (September to December) terms in a calendar year (January to December) provided they remain enrolled full-time at KPU in the term preceding the break and in the term following the break. You can find more information about scheduled breaks on our Enrolment Status and Scheduled Breaks webpage.

5. What documents does KPU International issue for current students?

  • Study Permit Extension letter
  • PGWP Application / Completion letter
  • Withdrawal letter (for students who have not registered for 3 consecutive semesters)
  • Study Permit Restoration letter
  • Confirmation of Enrolment letter – Special Purpose
  • Authorized Leave letter
  • Initial Study Permit letter
  • Co-op Work Permit letter

For more information on these letters and how to apply (if applicable), check our Support Letters for IRCCC Applications page.

6. Is the Completion letter the same as the PGWP letter and when will I receive it?

Yes, the Completion letter and Post Graduate work Permit (PGWP) letter are the same. Your PGWP letter will be sent to your KPU email account automatically within 3-5 business days after you have been approved by the Senate to graduate. You do NOT need to apply for it. However, you must apply for graduation in order to receive this letter.

Please note: The completion letter is issued after your graduation date, not when you finish classes.

7. This is my last semester. How much can I work before I receive my PGWP letter?

Our International Advising team has created an International Students Working Eligibility webpage with detailed information on working eligibility.

Please review this page to learn more about your working eligibility inquiry. If you still have questions, please speak to an International Student Advisor.

8. I need to go to the doctor. How does my guard.me insurance work?

When you need to see a doctor, we recommend using “Find a Canadian clinic” first. In most cases, you would need to pay out of pocket first and then submit a claim on the GuardMe website. Make sure you keep all your original receipts to submit a claim. For additional info on claims, please email claims@guard.me. Some medical services in BC use direct billing, which means they bill your health insurance provider (GuardMe) directly. If you visit a clinic that offers direct billing (guard.me/kpu > Find a Clinic), simply provide your policy number.

For more information, please email intlstudentlife@kpu.ca

9. Do I need to have MSP? My friends didn’t apply for it.

Yes, it is mandatory. All BC residents, including international students, are required to sign up for BC MSP.

For more information, please check out the page Health Insurance for International Students.

10. Do I need to change my program to be PGWP eligible concerning the IRCC changes?

Please speak to an International Student Advisor.
